To teach basic shop skills including using a manual mill and lathe, the Edgerton Center at MIT has students construct flashlights. This example project was picked up by some other machine shops at MIT, so I actually ended up getting pretty good at making heavy flashlights (we only machined the parts, we didn't design them).
